home52 Transportation services boost health and independence for riders

home52 Transportation was launched by home52 – a subsidiary of Council on Aging – in 2021 to provide a better transportation alternative to older adults than traditional commercial, public transit and rideshare services options. Lack of reliable and specialized transportation can make it difficult for individuals to remain in their homes and communities as they age.

“Transportation challenges can become significant barriers for those with disabilities and older adults wishing to age in place, particularly due to chronic illnesses or health-related issues and when caregivers work full time,” said John Myres, home52 Transportation manager. While most rides through the service are available to individuals enrolled in various Council on Aging programs, home52 Transportation this year secured several grants that are permitting it to offer complimentary rides in Hamilton County to lower income older adults and adults with disabilities.

This grant funding eliminated transportation barriers for Zethree, a Hamilton County resident who has congestive heart failure. When her doctor recommended that she attend cardiac outpatient rehabilitation at Christ Hospital three days a week for 12 weeks, she contacted home52 Transportation to inquire about eligibility for services. She qualified for complementary rides and became a regular rider to her therapy sessions.

home52 Transportation offers door-through-door service, which was essential for Zethree. “Walking to the bus stop has become increasingly hard for me. I have difficulty with breathing when walking the distance and at times I have concerns for my safety,” she said. “Having the service provided me with peace of mind, as my ride picked me up at my door.”

The ride scheduling process was simple and home52 Transportation staff provided reminders for Zethree’s appointments. She found the drivers to be exceptionally kind, often offering a step stool to help her get into the vehicle. Zethree’s participation in rehab significantly improved her physical health, allowing her to walk more comfortably.

Making social connections is also important to the health and well-being of older adults, especially those like Zethree who are accustomed to being independent. She worked in sales for American Airlines for over 30 years, which provided the opportunity to travel. Her favorite destination was the Virgin Islands. She loved being with her work team and always organized celebrations for others at work.

At rehab, Zethree enjoyed connecting with others who are facing similar health challenges and forming meaningful relationships. She found joy in being around others and developed a fondness for the staff at Christ Hospital. She enjoyed sharing light-hearted moments with them, often exchanging jokes upon her arrival for sessions.

“Thanks to the generous support of these grants, we’re able to help those who qualify with free rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, social activities and more,” Myres said. “The funding is really making a difference in people’s lives.”
